We will now finish last year stories. / Ahora terminaremos las historias del año anterior.

Nuestra mascota en Playa Pocitos / Our pet in Playa Pocitos

In December we went to Uruguay. Janelle still has a tourist visa (she is trying to change her status) and has to leave the country every three months. We took advantage of a long weekend to leave Buenos Aires. We went to Montevideo where our friend Silvina proved that she is an excellent tour guide. She arranged a tight schedule for us that allowed us to see most of the city during our weekend stay. Our trip ended with a magnificent Noche de las Luces, Nigth of Lights, a fireworks display, along the Rio de la Plata shore, that lasted more than 40 minutes.

Y como dice la canción "diciembre me gustó pa’ que te vayas...” Primero nos fuimos a Uruguay. Janelle tiene visa de turista y tiene que salir del país cada tres meses. Así que aprovechamos para salir de Buenos Aires. Fuimos a Montevideo en donde Silvina, una amiga, fue una excelente guía de turistas: nos preparó un itinerario muy apretado pero que nos permitió ver gran parte de la capital en un fin de semana. Nuestra visita culminó con la celebración de la Noche de las luces, un festival de fuegos artificiales, que se hace al lado de la playa del Río de la Plata, y que resultó espectacular los 40 minutos que duró.

A few weeks later, we house-sat Laura’s, a friend from church. The house is close to church, Janelle’s work and some of our friends. It is in a nice area that allowed us to visit some parts of town that otherwise would have been hard to see.

Después nos fuimos a la casa de Laura, para cuidarla mientras Laura y Lucky, su hija, se iban de vacaciones. Está en una zona cercana a la iglesia, el trabajo de Janelle y nuestros amigos. Fue un cambio agradable y nos dedicamos a visitar algunas partes de la ciudad que de otra manera no lo hubiéramos hecho.

We celebrated Janelle’s b-day with a party. She had said that her b-day (Dec. 16) is so close to Christmas that most people forget about it. So I decided to surprise her, with a little help of our friends. Tito surprised us even more when he performed his now famous Japanese tap dance. Janelle – it´s great to have a good husband and good friends!

Memo, Noe, Janelle, Cami, Gus, Tito

Celebramos el cumple de Janelle con una fiesta sorpresa. Con frecuencia se había quejado de que su cumple es muy cercano a navidad (Dic 16) y que la mayoría de las veces la gente no se acuerda. Pero con ayuda de nuestros amigos la sorprendimos. Tito nos sorprendió aun más con un formidable, y ahora famoso, tap japonés.

Christmas arrived in the middle of the summer. We hit the 100ºF plus mark a few times. We bought our own little Christmas tree, since we will be here for a couple more years. We spent Christmas eve with Christian and Silvina Kerr, friends from church, who have been very kind and welcoming with us. The celebration was a bit untraditional for us: first of all the temperature and second, we had argentine asado, grilled beef. We spent the evening of the 25^th with Gus, Cami and Noe… a second celebration – so it can be said that not only Mexicans like to party. We shared New Year’s Resolutions and prayed for one another. We are thankful for Gods many blessings this year, especially the wonderful friends He has given us here

Navidad con los Kerr / Christmas with the Kerrs

La navidad llegó en medio del verano y con temperaturas cercanas a los 40ºC. Compramos un pequeño arbolito navideño pues sabemos que no vamos a estar aquí por mucho tiempo. La noche del 24 cenamos con Christian y Silvina Kerr, unos amigos de la iglesia que han sido muy amables con nosotros. La celebración pareció un poco ortodoxa, primero por ser verano, y segundo porque el plato principal fue un asado argentino. La noche del 25 estuvimos con Gus, Cami y Noe… una segunda celebración – para que no digan que sólo los mexicanos celebramos.

We waited for the New Year at Tito’s with Gus, Cami, Noe, … and of course, Tito. Gus, an excellent chef, took charge of dinner. After dinner we saw fireworks shot up by people all over the city from the roof. They lasted forever. We also kept the Mexican tradition of eating 12 grapes for the new year. To top off the night, we celebrated our first game of the year and Cami won.

Esperamos el año nuevo en la casa de Tito con Gus, Cami, Noe,… y por supuesto, Tito. La cena estuvo a cargo de Gus, que es un excelente chef. Después vimos los fuegos artificiales desde la azotea, que duraron una eternidad. Y para terminar Tuvimos nuestro primer juego del año, que ganó Cami.

I (Memo) blew it from the very first hours of the year. When we left Tito’s place, I left the house keys in Tito’s car. So, Janelle and I had to spend several hours in the street in the middle of the day. We hit the 106ºF mark. We waited until our friend had finished visiting his family. Of course we did not want to interrupt him with a call. The good thing about it is that from now on everything is going to get better because we have already gone through the worst part of the year… we hope you see our optimism.

Para comenzar el año, cuando salimos de la casa de Tito dejé las llaves de la casa en el coche de Tito, así que Janelle y yo nos tuvimos que quedar varias horas en la calle, al medio día y con una temperatura de 41ºC hasta que nuestro amigo terminó las visitas familiares obligatorias, las cuales no quisimos interrumpir con una llamada. Lo bueno de eso, es que todo va a ser mejor porque ya pasamos lo peor del año… espero que admitan nuestro optimismo al comenzar este año.

El tamaño justo para que lo leas y lo disfrutes…

We have been really bad at keeping our blog. One of our New Year’s resolutions is to become worse at it… since one always turns out breaking most of those resolutions, our chances to improve are better. :o)

Hemos sido bastante malos para mantener el blog. Uno de nuestros propósitos de año nuevo es volvernos más malos… bueno lo que pasa es que uno siempre termina rompiendo la mayoría de sus propósitos y entonces nuestras posibilidades de mejorar son más grandes. :o)

The end of the year was here so suddenly that it took us by surprise. I think it’s making a habit of doing that! As every year´s end, the list of things to do was huge. It may be due to the fact that procrastination is a fact in our lives… one of those Mexican habits. However, we are not going to make a detailed account of the events. We’ll hit just the most outstanding - with pictures so that you don’t get bored, and still can figure out the story… on the other hand we hope the pictures are not boring. If they are, we really stink.

El fin de año nos cayó de repente. Creo que se ha acostumbrado a sorprendernos de esa manera. Como todo fin de año, la lista de cosas por hacer era enorme. Probablemente se deba a eso de dejar todo para el final, esto de las costumbres mexicanas. Pero no vamos a hacer un recuento minucioso de lo que hicimos. Sólo lo más relevante y con fotos para que no se aburran y puedan reconocer la historia… por otro lado esperamos que las fotos no sean aburridas, porque si lo son, estamos en el hoyo.

SEPTIEMBRE / SEPTEMBER

In September we gathered with hundreds of people to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day (if you did not know it, it is not on Cinco de Mayo). It was in a beautiful 19^th century building. We sang along with the mariachis and trios and enjoyed the traditional dances. It was lots of fun.

En septiembre (o como dicen y escriben aquí setiembre) nos reunimos con cientos de personas a celebrar el tradicional Grito de Independencia. La embajada mexicana se puso las pilas y consiguió el edificio central de correos para el evento. Hubo tríos, mariachis y algunos bailes folclóricos que nos hicieron cantar a voz en cuello hasta estar listos para dar el famoso grito.

OCTUBRE / OCTOBER

In October Memo went to see Toluca, his hometown soccer team, play. It was a cold day.

En octubre fui a ver al Toluca jugar contra San Lorenzo. Fue un día de mucho frío y en el que no nos fue muy bien (3-1 en contra) pero en Toluca nos repusimos y pasamos a la semifinal.

NOVIEMBRE / NOVEMBER

In November we had several important events. First of all the school Memo’s attending agreed to accept Memo in the program they had originally offered him. The program had been changed so that instead of three years, it would take him four and a half to finish. Nobody could believe it. It got so bad that we had decided to go back to Mexico if the situation did not change. Praise God for this miracle.

En noviembre tuvimos varios eventos importantes. En primer lugar la escuela aceptó nuestra queja por el cambio de programa en mis estudios. Esto significaba que en vez de terminar en tres años, lo haría en cuatro y medio. Gracias a Dios por este milagro. Nadie lo podía creer. Y de hecho nosotros habíamos contemplado la posibilidad de regresarnos a México si la situación no mejoraba.

About mid-November we went to the British Hospital Ball with some friends. It is a fund raiser that took place at the embassador’s house. Many important people were there. It was thrilling and intimidating at the same time. So we dressed up to the occasion… and Memo did not even have a tie. We had lots of fun: we sang, ate, danced, and laugh all night long.

A mediados del mes fuimos con nuestros amigos más cercanos a la fiesta del Hospital Británico. Una fiesta para recaudar fondos para la institución y que se realizó en la casa del embajador y a la que asisten otros embajadores y otras personalidades públicas. Era emocionante e intimidante al mismo tiempo. Así que nos tuvimos que vestir de acuerdo a la ocasión y yo que ni siquiera tenía corbata. Nos divertimos a morir: cantamos, comimos, bailamos
y nos reímos muchísimo

Last in November was Thanksgiving Day. We shared it with Raquel, a good friend and neighbour from Puerto Rico and Memo’s fellow student. We don’t really know many Americans here. It was simple but meaningful.

El último evento del mes fue el Día de Acción de Gracias. Bueno nosotros no lo celebramos en México, pero para Janelle es algo muy importante. Ya que no conocemos a muchas personas de los EEUU que vivan cerca, lo compartimos con Raquel. Ella es una estudiante en ISEDET y con la que hemos hecho una buena amistad. Ella es de Puerto Rico y no perdemos las esperanzas de que nos consiga los autógrafos de Ricky Martin y de Chayane. Ja, ja, ja, como si nos gustaran los tipos.

By the way, we had lots of visitors this month: a few colonies of weird insects (they look like termites but we've been told they are ants) decided to share our small apartment with us. We opposed them and had it fumigated.

En este mes también nos cayeron muchas visitas: varias colonias de insectos raros (parecen termitas, pero nos han dicho que son hormigas) decidieron compartir nuestro pequeño departamento, pero lo impedimos con una buena fumigación.
