JANUARY IN PATAGONIA

January is gone (and now that we are posting this blog, February and half of March have too). After celebrating Christmas and New Year, Janelle and I got ready to receive her parents.

We spent the first and last weeks with her parents in Buenos Aires. In the two weeks in between, we hit the road for over 3,000 mi.

Our first important stop was in Puerto Madryn and the Valdés Peninsula. The landscape is plain desert, but it is a pretty port city on the Atlantic coast. The main attraction is the wildlife around: elephant seals, sea lions, armadillos, guanacos (similar to a llama), ñandus (similar to ostrich), orcas and whales, as well as penguins and a large number of other birds. We saw them all except the whales (they stay in the bay June-Dec) and orcas. We watched for hours waiting for the orcas to show up for lunch (baby sea lions). We found out that 12 had come just two days before… one can only hate this kind of bad timing.

Then we spent a night at a famous old hotel in Trelew, just a short ways inland, where Butch Cassidy, as well as several presidents had stayed. We stopped at El Desafío (the Challenge), a park of recycled art that has made it in the Guinness Book of records, in a town called Gaimán. From there it was a full day’s drive through the immense uninhabited steppe between the coast and the mountains. (I must admit that I daydreamed of riding my bicycle there.) At the foot of the Andes, Esquel is very pretty, with forests, and attractive mountains that still have some snow in the summer.

Then, north, to Bariloche. On the way, we stopped for lunch at the market in El Bolsón. It is a small city that cares a lot for ecology and has a new-agy feeling… to sound new-agy. We had an interesting encounter there . . . perhaps we’ll tell that story another time.

We visited the magnificent mountains and lakes around Bariloche. Truth is that the city is crowded but all the natural scenery around it is breath-taking. Janelle and I rented bikes to pedal around. We got rained on, but enjoyed it a whole lot.

We kept going north to San Martín de los Andes. We drove through Villa la Angostura, where I finally found someone who rented me a bike to ride the seven-lake route. Janelle and her parents went ahead by car while I pedaled through this really gorgeous place for the next ten hours (blog on its way). San Martín is much smaller than Bariloche and we liked walking around the little town on the lake. We hiked, did some mountain biking and water biking as well.

On the way back to Buenos Aires, we saw some condors flying in the Andes. We also saw the skeleton of the largest dinosaur in the world: an argentinosaurius. The return home was long and tiring – two days on the road. We came to the end, tired but happy.

ENERO EN LA PATAGONIA

Y se fue enero (y ahora que publicamos, también han pasado febrero y la mitad de marzo). Pero no pasó sin dejar huella. Después de las celebraciones navideñas y de fin de año, Janelle y yo nos preparamos para recibir a los suegros que vinieron a visitarnos.

Estuvimos en Buenos Aires la primera y la última semana, mientras que las dos semanas intermedias nos lanzamos al camino a recorrer 5,000 km por el interior del país.

Nuestro primer punto importante fue Puerto Madryn y la Península Valdés. Un lugar plano y desértico, pero la ciudad es agradable. Los principales atractivos de estos lugares son los animales salvajes que incluyen elefantes y leones marinos, focas, armadillos, guanacos, ñandúes, maras, orcas y ballenas, así como pingüinos y una gran variedad de otras aves. Vimos de todo menos ballenas que llegan en esta época, ni orcas. Estuvimos horas parados frente a la playa esperando que se apareciera una para almorzase algo. Supimos que dos días antes vieron 12 el mismo día… uno odia este tipo de situaciones.

Luego, más al oeste, pasamos la noche en un antiguo y famoso hotel en Trelew. Butch Cassidy, un famoso gángster estuvo hospedado ahí hace muchos años… bueno, también algunos presidentes lo hicieron. Nuestro siguiente punto fue Esquel. Fueron dos días de viaje por la enorme y deshabitada estepa. Tengo que admitir que con frecuencia soñé con hace un viaje en bicicleta por esa región. Nos detuvimos en “El Desafío”, en Gaimán, un lugar donde los dueños han hecho un parque/museo reciclando materiales de deshecho y que está en el libro de los récords de Guinness. Esquel es muy bonito; al pie de los Andes, boscoso y con atractivas montañas que aún en el verano conservan algo de nieve.

Bariloche.

Seguimos al norte hacia el famoso Bariloche. En el camino nos detuvimos a almorzar en el mercado de “El Bolsón”. Es una ciudad pequeña que se preocupa por la ecología y en la que se siente un aire de “nueva era”. Tuvimos un encuentro bastante extraño ahí… es posible que después les contemos la historia.

Ya en Bariloche fuimos a las magníficas montañas y lagos que lo rodean. La neta la ciudad está muy llena de gente, pero los paisajes naturales alrededor son impresionantes. Janelle y yo rentamos unas bicis para andar por los alrededores y nos llovió, pero lo disfrutamos mucho.

Seguimos a San Martín de los Andes. En el camino pasamos por Villa la Angostura en donde por fin alguien me rentó una bici para hacer la región de los siete lagos. Janelle y los suegros siguieron en carro mientras yo pedaleé por este hermoso lugar las siguientes 10 horas (espero hacer un blog de esto, no crean que se van a salvar). San Martín es más chico que Bariloche y eso nos gustó porque hay mucho menos gente. Caminamos por las montañas, hice bici de montaña… y de agua junto con Janelle.

Durante el regreso vimos algunos cóndores volando por los Andes. También vimos el esqueleto del dinosaurio más grande del mundo: un argentinosaurio. Regresamos cansados pero contentos, después de otros dos días de camino.

In December we went to Uruguay. Janelle still has a tourist visa (she is trying to change her status) and has to leave the country every three months. We took advantage of a long weekend to leave Buenos Aires. We went to Montevideo where our friend Silvina proved that she is an excellent tour guide. She arranged a tight schedule for us that allowed us to see most of the city during our weekend stay. Our trip ended with a magnificent Noche de las Luces, Nigth of Lights, a fireworks display, along the Rio de la Plata shore, that lasted more than 40 minutes.

Y como dice la canción "diciembre me gustó pa’ que te vayas...” Primero nos fuimos a Uruguay. Janelle tiene visa de turista y tiene que salir del país cada tres meses. Así que aprovechamos para salir de Buenos Aires. Fuimos a Montevideo en donde Silvina, una amiga, fue una excelente guía de turistas: nos preparó un itinerario muy apretado pero que nos permitió ver gran parte de la capital en un fin de semana. Nuestra visita culminó con la celebración de la Noche de las luces, un festival de fuegos artificiales, que se hace al lado de la playa del Río de la Plata, y que resultó espectacular los 40 minutos que duró.

A few weeks later, we house-sat Laura’s, a friend from church. The house is close to church, Janelle’s work and some of our friends. It is in a nice area that allowed us to visit some parts of town that otherwise would have been hard to see.

Después nos fuimos a la casa de Laura, para cuidarla mientras Laura y Lucky, su hija, se iban de vacaciones. Está en una zona cercana a la iglesia, el trabajo de Janelle y nuestros amigos. Fue un cambio agradable y nos dedicamos a visitar algunas partes de la ciudad que de otra manera no lo hubiéramos hecho.

We celebrated Janelle’s b-day with a party. She had said that her b-day (Dec. 16) is so close to Christmas that most people forget about it. So I decided to surprise her, with a little help of our friends. Tito surprised us even more when he performed his now famous Japanese tap dance. Janelle – it´s great to have a good husband and good friends!

Celebramos el cumple de Janelle con una fiesta sorpresa. Con frecuencia se había quejado de que su cumple es muy cercano a navidad (Dic 16) y que la mayoría de las veces la gente no se acuerda. Pero con ayuda de nuestros amigos la sorprendimos. Tito nos sorprendió aun más con un formidable, y ahora famoso, tap japonés.

Christmas arrived in the middle of the summer. We hit the 100ºF plus mark a few times. We bought our own little Christmas tree, since we will be here for a couple more years. We spent Christmas eve with Christian and Silvina Kerr, friends from church, who have been very kind and welcoming with us. The celebration was a bit untraditional for us: first of all the temperature and second, we had argentine asado, grilled beef. We spent the evening of the 25^th with Gus, Cami and Noe… a second celebration – so it can be said that not only Mexicans like to party. We shared New Year’s Resolutions and prayed for one another. We are thankful for Gods many blessings this year, especially the wonderful friends He has given us here

Navidad con los Kerr / Christmas with the Kerrs

La navidad llegó en medio del verano y con temperaturas cercanas a los 40ºC. Compramos un pequeño arbolito navideño pues sabemos que no vamos a estar aquí por mucho tiempo. La noche del 24 cenamos con Christian y Silvina Kerr, unos amigos de la iglesia que han sido muy amables con nosotros. La celebración pareció un poco ortodoxa, primero por ser verano, y segundo porque el plato principal fue un asado argentino. La noche del 25 estuvimos con Gus, Cami y Noe… una segunda celebración – para que no digan que sólo los mexicanos celebramos.

We waited for the New Year at Tito’s with Gus, Cami, Noe, … and of course, Tito. Gus, an excellent chef, took charge of dinner. After dinner we saw fireworks shot up by people all over the city from the roof. They lasted forever. We also kept the Mexican tradition of eating 12 grapes for the new year. To top off the night, we celebrated our first game of the year and Cami won.

Esperamos el año nuevo en la casa de Tito con Gus, Cami, Noe,… y por supuesto, Tito. La cena estuvo a cargo de Gus, que es un excelente chef. Después vimos los fuegos artificiales desde la azotea, que duraron una eternidad. Y para terminar Tuvimos nuestro primer juego del año, que ganó Cami.

I (Memo) blew it from the very first hours of the year. When we left Tito’s place, I left the house keys in Tito’s car. So, Janelle and I had to spend several hours in the street in the middle of the day. We hit the 106ºF mark. We waited until our friend had finished visiting his family. Of course we did not want to interrupt him with a call. The good thing about it is that from now on everything is going to get better because we have already gone through the worst part of the year… we hope you see our optimism.

Para comenzar el año, cuando salimos de la casa de Tito dejé las llaves de la casa en el coche de Tito, así que Janelle y yo nos tuvimos que quedar varias horas en la calle, al medio día y con una temperatura de 41ºC hasta que nuestro amigo terminó las visitas familiares obligatorias, las cuales no quisimos interrumpir con una llamada. Lo bueno de eso, es que todo va a ser mejor porque ya pasamos lo peor del año… espero que admitan nuestro optimismo al comenzar este año.
